Storm season 2026–27: record your home before December

Queensland's storm season runs from October to April. Here's what to do this week, and why a dated record of  your home before the first storm is worth having.

Storm season 2026–27: record your home before December

Queensland's severe weather season has started. The Bureau of Meteorology says October to April is the peak period for storms, cyclones and floods, and that southern Queensland's highest risk of severe thunderstorms runs from October to December. This season also arrives with a strong El Niño and record warm global temperatures, and a hotter than usual spring and summer is likely.

What to do this week

Get Ready Queensland's advice comes down to three steps: know your risk, make a plan, and pack a kit that will see your household through at least three days. At the campaign's launch, insurers added three more: check your policy is current, walk around your property, and fix maintenance issues before the next storm.

Record the house while it's still in one piece

After a storm, the Insurance Council's advice is to photograph and video the damage before you clean up, and to list every damaged item. That records what the storm did. It doesn't show what the house looked like the day before, and that's often where a claim gets argued: whether a crack, a stain or a lifted sheet was caused by the storm or was already there.

A pre-season record answers that question in advance. We capture the house room by room, and the outside as it's seen from the ground: ceilings and cornices, walls, windows and doors, the roofline and gutters, fences, retaining walls and sheds. You get a dated 3D walkthrough you can open in any browser and share with your insurer, your builder or your family. If a storm does come through, a second capture afterwards lets you compare the two, room by room.

It isn't a building report or a structural assessment, and it doesn't replace your insurer's assessor. It's a record of what was visible on the day.

Booking before the storms

We capture across South East Queensland, and in Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast on scheduled runs. The best time is before December, while the house hasn't been tested yet. Each walkthrough stays hosted for six months, then it's archived and can be reinstated on request.
